Hontiveros out, Reyes/Fonacier In

Dondon Hontiveros
Dondon Hontiveros has decided to quit Smart Gilas due to fatigue and health issues. With Hontiveros out 2 new Talk N Text players was added to the Smart Gilas pool: Ryan Reyes and Larry Fonacier.

We would like to thank Dondon Hontiveros for his service to the country, let us support his decision ad continue to support our Philippine National Basketball Team.

Game Highlights:
– Smart Gilas had no answer for Iranian-NBA center Hamed Haddadi with 36 points, 8 rebounds and 5 blocks.
– Marcus Douthit led Smart Gilas with 16 points
– Mark Barroca filling in for the injured JV Casio contributed 10 points but was also injured in the 4th quarter
– Marcio Lassiter was the only other Smart Gilas player in double figures with 10 points
– Iran led in rebounding, 44-21
– With the loss, Philippines will now play for 3rd place against home team, Chinese-Taipei at 5pm
– South Korea will battle Iran for the Jones Cup Championship tomorrow at 7pm

– Dondon Hontiveros had a breakout game with 14 points (12 in the 4th period) and helped in defending Japanese sharpshooter Keijuro Matsui (8/8 from three-point range) in the 4th quarter
– Chris Tiu and Marcio Lassiter both scored 11 points
– Smart Gilas had 29 points in the 4th quarter while limiting Japan to only 10 points
– With the win, Philippines advances to the semifinal around against Iran tomorrow at 7pm
– JV Casio maybe out of the tournament due to a knee injury

– Philippines bounced back from a big loss the night before against South Korea to beat UAE by 35 points
– Marcus Douthit led Smart Gilas with 23 points and 13 rebounds
– Chris Lutz (13), Marcio Lassiter (10) and Asi Taulava (10) had double digits in scoring
– Philippines shot 54% from the field and outrebounded UAE, 57-29
– Philippines committed only 8 turnovers and dished out 17 assists
– Philippines now has 4 wins and 2 losses with 1 game to go against Japan
– Philippines had to beat Japan in order to advance to the semifinal round

– Mac Baracael and Chris Tiu led Smart Gilas with 14 points each
– 5 players scored in double figures with Lassiter and Aguilar with 13 points and Lutz with 12 points
– Marcus Douthit and JV Casio did not play (getting ready for game against South Korea)
– Asi Taulava was ejected from the game along with Yoong Jing Kwaan (After Malaysian player Kwaan grabbed Taulava below the belt, Asi retaliated with 2 punches)
– It was a close game in the 1st half but Philippines held Malaysia to just 11 points in the 3rd quarter
