Philippines wins 1st game in Dubai Invitational

Philippines (Smart Gilas) defeats Lebanon (Mouttahed), 79-77
January 11, 2013

Game Highlights:
-Marcus Douthit led Smart Gilas with 20 points and 10 rebounds
-Garvo Lanete with 15 points
-Ronjay Buenafe contributed 10 points
-Kevin Alas with 9 points
-9-0 run by Smart Gilas in the 4th quarter led by Alas and Lanete
-Mouttahed played with 3 imports
-Mouttahed started the game on a 11-0 blast
-Smart Gilas was down by 15 points in the 1st quarter

Marcus Douthit to play in the PBA

Marcus Douthit

Naturalized player Marcus Douthit might play in the PBA again as an Import in the 2nd conference where there is no height limit. According to reports, Talk N Text and Alaska are interested in his services after Air 21 released his rights.

But right now, Douthit will lead the Smart Gilas team composed mostly of Cadet players in the Dubai Invitational starting January 10, 2013. More info about the Smart Gilas Dubai Invitational

2012 has been a great year for Smart Gilas Pilipinas! 2012 started with Jong Uichico joining the Smart Gilas Coaching Staff as an Assistant Coach then in February, Coach Chot Reyes was named head coach to replace Coach Rajko Toroman.

In July 2012, Smart Gilas 2.0 had their first tournament and was coached by Jong Uichico, they played in the 2012 SEABA Tournament and was crowned champions led by Marcus Douthit, Alaska players LA Tenorio, Mac Baracael and Sonny Thoss and Chris Tiu who played his last tournament for Smart Gilas.

August 2012 was a great month for Smart Gilas as they were crowned Jones Cup 2012 Champions, the last time Philippines won the Jones Cup was in 1998. LA Tenorio was named Jones Cup Tournament MVP.

The 2012 FIBA Asia Cup was held in September, Smart Gilas came up short as we lost to Qatar in the battle for 3rd place and placed 4th.

In November, plans to make Javale McGee the next naturalized player for the country did not push through and the Smart Gilas Cadet pool was formed composed of amateur basketball players including Greg Slaughter, Kevin Alas and Fil-Am recruit Matt Ganuelas Rosser

Then in December 2012, Smart Gilas added another Fil-Am recruit, Justin Melton to beef up the Smart Gilas line-up, which only has 3 PBA players plus Marcus Douthit which will participate in 2 Invitational Tournaments in January 2013 in Hong Kong and Dubai!

Smart Gilas had 2 tune-up games against the Kuala Lumpur Dragons last December 29 and 30, 2012.

1st Game: Smart Gilas defeats KL Dragons, 86-80
Highlights:
-Ronjay Buenafe with 16 points
-Justin Melton with 12 points
-Greg Slaughter with 12 points
-Ronald Pascual with 8 points
-Nino Canaleta with 8 points
-Marcus Douthit did not play

2nd Game: KL Dragons defeats Smart Gilas , 89-82
Highlights:
-Marcus Douthit with 15 points
-Justin Melton with 15 points
-Nino Canaleta with 12 points
-Ronjay Buenafe with 10 points

Current Smart Gilas Roster January 2013

The Smart Gilas Roster for the Invitational Tournaments this January 2013 was already announced by Coach Chot Reyes. There are many notable players missing from the lineup which composed of mostly Smart Gilas cadets.

While these are just practice games for the FIBA Asia Championship in August 2013, Smart Gilas needs to add more depth to their roster.

This current team will play in the invitational tournaments in Dubai and Hong Kong on January 2013.

Only players from eliminated teams in the current PBA Philippine Cup were invited that is why no players from Alaska, Talk N Text, San Mig Coffee and Rain or Shine. Included in the pool but injured: LA Tenorio (Ginebra) and Gary David (Globalport). Other players were invited to join the pool but did not attend practice: Arwind Santos, Junmar Fajardo, Jay Washington, Alex Cabagnot and Chris Lutz of Petron Blaze Boosters.
