Why Chot Reyes should be retained as Gilas Pilipinas Coach?

Gilas Pilipinas Coach Chot Reyes

We all have been watching and reading comments by many so called experts calling on the resignation of Gilas Pilipinas Head Coach Chot Reyes.

We would like to hear the side of others who want to retain Chot Reyes as Gilas Pilipinas Coach. Why should he be retained as Gilas Pilipinas Coach?

A comment that we read is the experience by Chot Reyes in both the FIBA World Cup and Asian Games will be a great help in future tournaments as long as he learned something from it. Another issue is if we will have a new Head Coach, the players will need to learn a new system again and we do not know if that system will work against our opponents in Asia and the World.

Yes, Coach chot should be retained. It will be great help in future tournaments as long as he learned something from the World Cup and Fiba Asia. 🙂

    • DON CORLEONE says:

He needs to learn more, he cannot help the team if your not fit enough as a coach.

      • jemar bernante says:

    • Cimaron says:

choke reyes never learned a lesson from World Cup.gilas choke 4 games in that tournament. Same story in Asian Games. if basketball are played by 3 qtrs. only. gilas record could be 10 – 0 from the World Cup to Asian Games. point is, choke is not a good tactician. he is good as a motivational coach, though.

      • joel salvador says:

I beg to disagree. Coach Chot is not a good motivator also. He broke the heart of Douhit when coach Chot said that Douhit should have not taken that 3-point shot. Douhit just used his brain to shoot because the time is dying already and all his team mates were guarded heavily. Douhit if motivated can do a lot. This is also one of the reasons why we always lost in the fourth quarter, coach Chot lacked in motivating his players to win…Coach Chot easily succumbs to pressure. Nevertheless, he should be retain because he’s got strong backing in the management…

      • Vicente o. Santos jr. says:

Players win the game… Coaches lose it… Yan ang masakit.. Gilas maybe got the lowest place ever in 2014 asian games since the inclusion of pba players but we must remember that we also got to play in fiba world because of coach chot’ system. Napakataas ng tingin natin hindi lang sa gilas kundi sa philippine basketball, na kaya pala natin makag sabayan sa european brand of basketball that not anyone even the so called basketball experts can imagine.. Wala ngang naniniwala na mapapansin tayo dun eh. But look what happened? Yun ang sinasabi ko. Everybody is pointing their fingers on chot reyes. All i just wanna point out is that we must polish the system… Maybe long term, not just preparation for asian games or the olimpics, pero sa lahat ng liga. Synchronize the local leagues in international competetions. From college to pba leagues, let the coach freely pick players he want at dapat yun ipahiram ng pva teams. Let them practice with gilas. Forme chot is on a right track. Pero the way things are going with the help of mvp tama ang sistema.
So let us all support our gilas! The new 8th wonder of the world! The team that shock argentina puerto rico and croatia…LABAN PILIPINAS!!! PUSO!!!

        • gogoy gerund says:

we are trying to help by point out coach Chot many blunders.. Yeng guioa is better tactician & motivator why Chot tweeted before asean games that with or without Blatche will make the difference for Gilas before the asean campaign, knowing Marcus Douhit is our import…stupid! coach Joworski,is better to replace him, he brought RP team to a silver finish withoutthe help of an import….this ia not about chot system that work for Philippine team, this is his 3rd stint as National coach , so better to have a new but old system of the B ig J..!

    • romy sabaldan says:

      Second chance

      • gogoy gerund says:

naka third time na sya as coach of Gilas,National team dami nya palpak, si Jaworski mas mainam. if players being replaced if they suffer physical injuries why not a coach who suffer Psychological injury, mental endgame lapses, bad mouth his player in actual game, castigateimport thru media… Philippines doesn’t deserve an insane coach…and as citizen of Philippines can we not participate in the selection of our country’s coach, let’s do it by vote… the governing body must put up 5 names of noted coaches then let the people choose on basis of coaches credential..!vote according to resume & experience!

    • romy sabaldan says:

There are so many talented Pilipino players. There is only one Coach Chot Reyes

    • DECASTRO says:

    • bronce says:

      palitan na yan !!!

kitang-kita naman natin na kulang pa ang diskarte/kakayan/expirience ni Chot e,di pa nya kaya mghandle sa mga world/international tornament, anu sabi nya?”minamalas talaga” mali yan, kulang diskarte nya sa pgcocoach.malalakas nman mga players eh….kaya for me, PALITAN na yan… peace

    • Datu ITIM says:

Media hype and propaganda have conditioned the minds of Filipino fans that close-call losses ay “moral victories” na okay naman daw. That nullified basket against Kazakhstan diminished whatever respect he is claiming credit for earning back.

    • godofredo f hipol says:

bakit di nyo subukan na isama sa coaching staff si Tim Cone and tim cone will do the shots esp sa end game using the triangle offense….thats very effective. 2018 is the next asian games why not try to recruit more talented naturalized players, they are already eligible to play in 2018, remember the oca ruling on 3 year residency.

    • Nino Abulencia says:

yes Coach Chot needs to be retain but not as a headcoach but as an assistant coach our main goal is conquering the Asia if we always beat Iran and other country in Asia FIBA WoRLD is Automatic i think kung gusto gumaling ni chot reyes bilang coach ng GILAS nood lng sya ng mga international game sa ibat-ibang bansa para matuto pa sya kc nga ilang taon lng nong ngpalit ang Gilas ng Coach ung game system sa una lng nman mahirap pero kung determine ang coach at palyer walang mahirap dyan..

  2. Athens Uchiha says:

After A Big Loss On Asian Games, Do You Think that System Will work again if that so why would gilas was defeated. what if other country was studying what counterattack they can do about chot reyes play system..
Also let other players experience Playing for international games but choose for players with a lot of skills,,..

    • DON CORLEONE says:

  3. Christian Rey Elorde says:

Coach Chot sinumulan muna taposin mo wag umalis ng walang napapatunayan

    • DON CORLEONE says:

      • Don corleone baliw says:

Ulul nag silver nga sa fiba asia e at nkapasok sa world cup after 40 years.so what do you think ang nagawa nya?

      • Yuan Brana says:

Pero I’m so Proud with Gilas.

No Offense.

      • tssssssssssssss says:

      • Nino Abulencia says:

ang gusto lng natin dito ay maayos ung coaching staff i think Tim cone and Yeng Guiao needs to apart of GILAS Coaching staff
khit coaching staff lng ndi na headcoach pagbigyan nyo na its going to be exciting seeing them working together to create a play, motivating palyers….

  4. Benjamin Bermudez says:

Coach Chot’s approach to Gilas is strategic rather than tactical or reactionary to the needs of a tournament as seen in previous incarnations of the Philippine national men’s team. Rather than scraping a group of pros that will practice for a month prior to a tournament, his novel approach is to foster a program that fosters continuity with the ebb and flow of players into the team pool.

Also, in his tenure, he’s placed the Philippine team from 47th to 31st in two years, the best jump we’ve haf this side of EDSA1. To start from scratch would be foolhardy and undo the real, measurable progress we’ve had in basketball. It should be remembered that even the most powerful basketball team had two international setbacks before they committed to the current program under Coach K. We should change horses while crossing a river at midstream.

    • Macoy Saavedra says:

      Amen to that!

    • DON CORLEONE says:

What kind of strategy, tactical or recretionary are you talking about? Are you happy that Philippine team stepped backward from 47th to 31st where they can be in the top 10? Even before Chot Reyes is !@#$%^& as a coach try to look backward where he coached the philippine team from the past 20 yrs.

    • Harpoon says:

1.) Rankings are not all there is. It can measure success in the short term, but if you will analyze further what we have achieved in the World Cup and Asiad, you will see that Gilas was a ticking timebomb from the start. We were 1-4 in the World Cup. We could’ve been 3-2 if the coach had the right adjustments in the second half of the games against Argentina, Croatia and Puerto Rico. Our performance in the World Cup wasn’t a complete mess due to the close games, but I believe it was only due to the players’ performance, skills and abilities. We were outplayed. Their defense and offense plays sealed our fate, not our players’ incapacity to defeat them. Now who’s job was that to match those plays?

2.) We cannot compare it to Coach K’s success story. He had a win rate of above .750 in the NCAA and had won championships over and over. He was also an assistant coach in the 1992 Dream Team. He had experience and at the same time, a winning formula or program to offer for USA basketball. How about Coach C? What was his record in the PBA? He lost championship games with his inability to close out games.

3.) Lastly, he already admitted his lack of experience and other inadequacies. Every press con you would hear him say – “the responsibility falls on me” not only in Asiad but even during the World Cup. Opponents in Asiad had the capacity to adjust after half time resulting heart breaking losses. They were reactionary but atleast they knew how to win.

I know how you feel – that we can’t discount the fact that he brought us to the World Stage (partially, most of the work were from the players themselves). But he also brought us back to 7th place in the span of a year (luckily it wasn’t a FIBA qualifying tourney). Now tell me there is nothing wrong with that?

    • Jose Salmingo III says:

      I agree to that!!!…..(y)

  5. Jeff says:

Nag time out sya ball possession ntin.. Come from ur time out yun ha.. S fiba world, in 4qtr laging wlang go to guy, bkit? Takot murahin.. Laging tumutukod s last min.. Mbagal mg adjust ng play, ntataranta s last min.. Hindi sya fit s national team.. Ayaw n s knya ng taong bayan at ng player.. Takot ang nrramdaman ng player, hindi respect!!

    • kester says:

how u know na takot ang player bakit player ka ba?

      • DON CORLEONE says:

      • Andrew says:

exactly, i agree with you kester. mas maganda mgcomment ang mga naging player, at nkkpglaro ng competitive basketball. i think kulang pa tayo sa international exposure. sa 2019, sa tingin ko. mganda magging resulta natin sa FIBA Worlds. peak ng career nila Junmar, Greg at Japeth yan. may naturalized player tayo nyan, den xempre may mga international tournaments pa tayong sasalihan. given na un, nangyari na banderang kapos tayo. ganun talaga. pero ang maganda naman dun, kaya pla natin mkpgsabayan at sa tingin ko, naexcite din kayo dun. at nanalo naman tayo. isipin nyo na lng frustration were mounting. sunod sunod na talo, winnable games games against croatia, argentina at puerto rico. pero nkayanan parin nila na manalo sa senegal.

        • Loser says:

What about the reaction of El Presidente Mon Fernandez? What can you say about his reaction eh? I was able to talk to Bogs Adornado…. Guess what? He said the same thing…. Big time players saying that chot should step down…. Naf said…

    • tets says:

hindi naman saganun!!we have a big trust on coach chot!!

      • DON CORLEONE says:

takot masisi kaya laging kay blatche ang bola pag nasa crucial stage na ang laro, yun ang sakit ng gilas accept it or not lahat ayaw masisi sa pagkatalo, the losing pattern during fiba world cup is the same again and again.

      • Wla lng says:

  6. RJ says:

If we should retain coach chot reyes as head coach of our National team no changes for outcome/results for our future games. As evidence in World Cup and Asian Games we always loosed in end games, even we lead as double digits. But if we try a new coach, which a coach that not new in filipino style of basketball I think the adjustment would make easier. Like coach Tim Cone. He has an experienced in International and a Champion Coach. a great motivator as proven in PBA. Lastly even if he was new in a new team he can adjust well. HE was ADAPTABLE AND FLEXIBLE that a new team can blend in a good rhytm. As a result of San Mig Team! He always putting his team 1st before his self.
    This my personal opinion.
    Thank you!

    • Butsuk says:

      Agree!

    • yetbo says:

    • jemar bernante says:

i agree with you..coach tim is d best..we should try him…long preparation para makuha yung system nya..at dahil malayo pa ang mga international games dapat mag pili na nang coach para sa maagang preparation nang team….and thats is coach tim com

      • densyo says:

sakin naman tingin ko kung me papalit man kay coach chot satingin ko ung andun na din sa loob ng team like norman black na nadun na at aware na sa system ni coach chot..malay naten me idea din sila na di lang naiivovoice out ke chot..at sapalagay ko atleast couted na nila ang laro ng mga asian team at sa world stage..opinion lng

  7. kenneth says:

Dribble and drive system of coach chot is very suitable to gilas specially we’re undersize…with a little more polishment or refinement of the drible and drive system plus with the lessons learned from fiba world and asiad i think we’ll be more than capable in our future eandeavor…continuity of this system under coach chot will do good for phil.basketball

    • peter r. escalderon says:

Dribble drive is not effective in asiad, maybe nagulat natin sila sa fiba world cup dahil hindi pa tayo scouted, pero sa asiad na scout na nila ang gilas, so anong nangyari sa dribble drive system ni choke reyes, mas maganda siguro kung mas mabilis ang ball movement natin basic na touch passing lang pra…nauubos ang shotclock pag sobrang drible napaka dali na tuloy depensahan…kung mas mabilis ang ball movement natin mahihirapan sila mabasa yun dahil d nila alam kung sino ang titira…just like san antonio spurs ganun ang magandang systema..
