Smart Gilas Basketball: As seen time and time again in Asian B.Ball, Phi can’t win because they suck at shooting free throws.
I agree with you! they should be able to shoot those free throws as they are practicing it almost everyday, but still i salute the team and i still believe we can do it , just continue the program and add more talented players i think we have now in PBA
and possibly remove douthit from the lineup. di ko ma sikmura na ang main man at goto guy ng Philippines ay taga america. grabe naman. SHOW SOME PHILIPPINE PRIDE!!! nung world war 2 sa americano tayo dumepende tapos nung nagkasirasira yung bansa. tydings mcduffie agad ang pinakita para pakawalan tayo kasi naging liability na ang bansa. wag kayong maniwala agad diyan sa mga kano. if we want to be accomplished in whatever area, we should stop depending on the western powers and start building a TRUE PHILIPPINE TEAM! same goes with our politics and media. masyadong influenced ng europa at amerika kaya di tayo umaasenso.
WTF?! Phils Pride? san sa Pagnannakaw, lies & bad politcs. Nung WW2 under tyo ng Common wealth parang Hawaii & North Carolina. No.1 Tayo sa Asia in terms of economy & sports wala pa magnanakaw.
FIBA Rules Allow one naturalized player. A lot of teams are now having one naturalized player.Even the European Champion Spain has one naturalized player. Wag tayong mag paka hero. Tangapin nalang natin na maliliit tayo talaga.Unfair then naman kung wala tayong naturalized then ang iba meron. It is already part of the FIBA Rules so gagamitin natin ang opportunity para ma improve ang ating team.
point taken sir.
Uhh @223434 Philippines does have a naturalised player havent u heard of Marcus Douthit 6’11 good scorer defender and rebounder he was a big reason we reached the final 4. So basically were not really weak in the centre spot anymore we just need speed and clutch shooting from the our guards and forwards
Tama, pero kung iisipin mo, lamang pa rin tayo kasi naiwan ung Iran e. ahahaha may NBA player p nmn cla.
good point, we beat iran, i hope we keep toroman and his system in place and hope smart doesnt scrimp/mag kuripot after our 4th finish…so uch potential ung future team
pwd magsuggest..try nio pag samahin cla..sol mercado at gabe norwood & ryan reyes sa pointguard at james yap& lassiter, bobby parks & sa shooting guard, arwind, kelly & nico salva, calvin abueva sa small forward,pf sila washington, rico maierhoper, japeth aguilar, center naman cila slaughter,douhit,fajardo..
douthit, slaughter, aguilar, fajardo and toss should be a formidable frontline plus taulava if he can still play, plus slashers and pure shooters (the likes of samboy or duremdes or caidic), plus a trio of point guards (the likes of calma or johnny or helterbrandt) but should have one defensive specialist in the rooster…
JAWORSKI IS AN OVERRATED COACH. OLD SCHOOL PBA FAN, PSEW!
Quit comparing to the Jaworski’s coached national team. China and Korea were only the good teams back then. Quit living in the past, because the past was the reason we can’t play competitive basketball anymore.
JAWORSKI IS OLYMPIC PLAYER 2 TIMES YOU DONT KNOW THAT
We are talking about him a a Coach not as a Player. What kind of reason is that? And don’t talk to me about basketball like I don’t know anything. And don’t even try to bring up the silver medal in beijing 1990, any coach in the PBA could have done the same with the same players. as I’ve said before, the teams in Asia back then were not that good compare to the present Asian teams.
Not to mention, he was still playing in the PBA at the age of over 40 when he couldn’t play competitive basketball anymore, he was fortunate he was a playing-coach for with Ginebra, that alone only shows how low-quality was basketball back in the late 80’s to the mid 90’s. Having an old player play for marketing, no to better the quality and level of Philippine basketball, it always has been about “commercial sports.”

tama ka may Jaworski pala tayo(as coach or consultant)… too much experience…
U guys never learn, yeah those additions are really good but for f^%&sake, replace Tiu. We need tall and skilful high basketball IQ players. The average height of our players is 6’3, c’mon now? U saw it already… 6’3 player cant shoot with players 6’8 guarding them! They’ll gonna have a hard time. Pls pls pls! Learn from your mistakes. Get some vet pba players that has height, can run the ball, and of course, can defend. I just hope that lineup u presented is not final yet.
LEARN FROM YOUR MISTAKES.
i know a lot of people hate chris tiu for his performance and kasi ang isip ng mga tao na si chris puro pogi lang at natanggap lang sa team kasi magandang role model lang o ano pang etchos. pero he is actually one of the few players sa gilas na actually playing for the flag. not to mention that he is really filipino (lahat naman ata tayo may halong espanol at chinese na dugo.). Chris can improve his game and perhaps dapat pure point guard lang siya. ang liit kasi niya para sa sg position sa international play; provided na dedikado talaga siyang maglaro para sa bansa.
GOOD WORD…
good observation!
korea have TJ MOON…an american born player….naturalized korean player siya
@webbslinger: you are right, being a cebuano i know Fajardo, a UC webmaster and Slaughter too a UV green lancer. They single-handedly carry their respective teams to the championships. Both are playing center position with Slaughter the taller being a 7-footer. If they will be under the tutelage of a conditioning coach, they will become a force to reckon with.
i think Chris Tiu is not an effective point guard based sa nakita ko sa kanyang performance. mas bagay sa kanya ang 2 spot dahil magaling cyang defender ang kailangan lang nyang eh improve ang free throw nya chaka yung decision making nya dahil pag cya na ang nagdadala nang bola kalimitan TO ang results lagi kasi cyang dribble. kailangan cyang tularan dahil sa kanyang loyalty sa team dahil sa pag stay nya dito. cegurado akong magiimprove cya at magiging mentor cya sa mga susunod na players ng team Philippines! and sana kunin parin nilang head coach c mr. Rajko Toroman napakagaling nyang coach! Go Chris! Go Philippines! babawi tayo sa susunod na fiba Asia Championship!! we will continue to support you guys!! we love you all!!
I give my deepest sympathy to the gilas team. You did great, heads up to you. wag po kayong malungkot kung hindi man tayo nakakuha ng wild card sa london olympics dahil hindi po nauubos ang opportunity kung naniniwala kang meron pa, pag nawalan na tayo ng pag-asa doon nauubos ang opportunity natin for olympics birth. basta hanga po ako sa inyo, you made us proud guys.
Smart Gilas did a great job, they were the most prepared Philippine team that represented the country, but unfortunately, it was not enough.. We could have done better, with the program that smart gilas has and if only the PBA teams will cooperate, we could send the most talented team to represent the country. I’m listing here my 15 man pool for the next FIBA qualifiers.
1. Jimmy Alapag – 5’9″
2. L.A. Tenorio – 5’8″ He may be small, but he has a big heart, very
cerebral playmaker and consistent 3 point
shooter. can hit big shots in crucial moments.
3. Marcio Lassiter – 6’3″
4. James Yap – his shooting is always needed in international play.
5. Marcus Douthit – 6’11”
6. Jay Washington-6’7″ Versatile player can play both forward
positions and also can shoot knockdown shots
outside
7. Arwind Santos- 6’3″ good defensive player and rebounder, can also
shoot outside. He can guard bigger shooting
guards of other teams.
8. Sonny Thoss – 6’7″ Able back up for Marcus Douthit, can also shoot
from the perimeter
9. Joe Devance – 6’7″ versatile player, can play both forward
positions, good shooting touch from the 3-point
line.
10.Kelly Williams – 6’7″
11.Ranidel De Ocampo – 6’6″
12.Marc Pingris – 6’4″ good defender and rebounder, quick for his size,
energy guy, can guard multiple positions from
shooting guards to power forwards.
13.Ray Parks Jr. – 6’4″ talented big shooting guard, he also showed
what he can do during last youth olympics (3
on 3 basketball)
14. Chris Tiu – 6’0″
15. Chris Lutz – 6’4″
COACH – Rajko Toroman
This line up is just my opinion, If only all major basketball officials will commit to help our team and loan their players, I think we could do better in the next FIBA qualifiers. The Smart Gilas Program is in place, We have a good coach with international experience and next should be the most prepared and the best players that the Philippines has.
I agree…
We should not pick players because they play good in the PBA, some of the bench players in the PBA can play better “inernational basketball” than some starters and all-stars in your beloved PBA. We should base the line-up on how the player’s game could have a strong-consistent-presence in international games. James Yap? Fonacier? Tenorio? Even we give these players more practice they will always be inconsistent, maybe if they started when they were younger they could make a difference. Hontiveros is a steady shooter, better than J. Yap in international games. Tenorio is good but he is not an Alapag who can jump and shoot the three with ease. Fonacier doesn’t play defense, how can he guard taller and quicker guards? Thoss? Too thin to play back up to play defense, if we would still have Douthit, we need a back-up in center position who can play aggressive defense in short minutes. I see that the kind of line-up you and the others proposed were all scorers, we don’t need that kind of line-up, we need some role players, defensive specialist, a designated shooter and a consistent 2nd scorer to Douthit.
🙂 That is exactly my point! in the past 3 PBA backed Philippine Team only a few were consistent players in international baskeball: Centennial Team of Tim Cone : Espino,Duremdes, Meneses and Abarrientos (Caidic but age was a factor).. Jong Uichico’s National team: Hontiveros, Pennisi, Duremdes. Yeng Guiao’s Team Pilipinas : Pennisi, De Ocampo, Raymundo, Santos.. except for duremdes and abarrientos the rest of the players i mentioned who were consistent in FIBA were or are not MVP in the PBA. another consistent player in International basketball but was not as successful in PBA is Rommel Adducul! We need Dedicated consistent players with high basketball IQ who are willing to be trained and work hard for flag and country and they should be paid triple the salaries of those overpaid and over rated PBA stars. high IQ role players-one who totally understands the coach’s system and the game. why not Raise the Salaries of the Philippine Team Players if Commitment is the Issue? -Sigurado makikipagpatayan sila sa tryouts at depensa. That is also the reason why i stopped watching the PBA after repeatedly getting badly beaten by ASIAN countries-walang sustained commitmentn akala nila 1 year preparation lang ay ok na dapat dyan continuity ng basketball system hindi overnight success..
we badly need a backup center for douthit. From what i’ve heard there is Slaughter and Fajardo. if it is true then they should hire 2 strength and conditioning coaches (one conditioning coach and one baketball coach) for each individual to build speed, stamina and accuracy. similar to that of pacquiao’s Alex Ariza and Dirk Norwitzki’s personal trainer/conditioning coach. The conditioning coach is to build muscles in the right places and muscles they never used before while the basketball coach coincides with the fundamental post moves and shooting skills their position(Center/power forward) needs. The two must go hand in hand in order for the conditioning coach to device a better and effective program for the players he needs the guidance of an open minded basketball coach in order for his program to work… same with our shooting guards, point guards and small forwards.. Michael Jordan had one, Kobe Bryant has one i don’t see why each of the Smart Gilas players shouldn’t have 2 for each player 😉
Watching the PBA always make me wan’na change the channel, only old puppies watch the game now a days…
EXACTLY!!! Long-term commitments and basketball program for international competition. Smart-Gilas players should get a bigger pay check than those lazy-out of shape PBA players.
agree ako kay slaughter at fajardo maging backup kay marcus, special attention should be given to these two guys via stregths and conditioning coaches for big men must be afforded these two guys…their role will be that of role players.
larger compensation must be given by smart to these guys for representing flag and country.
get parks and ravena on board for long tour of duty…at least 2 years.
pba reinforcements like williams, washington, devance or santos is needed.
i hear that tiu and aguilar will stay…thats good.
mercado, alapag, tenorio for guards…but i prefer young guards to develop, larger, good IQ and potentially an outside threat…any suggestions?
2 more role players are needed…to be defensive stoppers.
TAGAL NAG PRACTIS TAPOS MAY NATURALIZE PA 4TH PADIN ANAK NG FILAM NAMYAN
TAMA! TAMA!
uhm… redirected to douthit.
oo nga e, hayss..
i think pwede ring isama sina………sudan daniel,ronald pascual,calvin abueva,at garvo lanite
NEXT TIME DAPAT KASAMA YAN
We should not pick players because the paly good in the PBA, we should base the line-up on how their game can go along in international games. James Yap? Fonacier? Tenorio? i agree but to be honest, douthit should not even be with the Philippine team.
The it only means you have not grown as a basketball fan. He didn’t do anything wrong, he was the reason why we had the chance to win it all. It was not his fault he’s an American. Basketball is a Global Sports. With out the Fil-ams or one naturalized players, just pure Filipino players, I guarantee you that even we practice everyday with your kind of Philippine team will never even reach the top 5 in the next 10 to 15 years in FIBA-Asia, unless our players decide to work-out the way NBA players do. People hate on the Fil-ams due to insecurities, when in fact, these players some people hate have been the reason why the our country still have a good professional league (good but not that good).
@nope…

I personally have no ill motion towards Douthit’s status as a fil am and as a basketball player; and YES! he did play his heart out but I can’t possibly embrace a player who isn’t a native of the country. As far as dedication is concerned, the probability of Douthit sugar coating his words of loyalty to the Philippines is VERY HIGH! He is no native of the country. I support the azkals however because we were never a ‘soccer country’ and as such it is perhaps wise to import fil ams to play for us and orient the filipinos in playing the sport (the way Europe has been playing soccer). But basketball? Having to rely heavily on an import despite the fact that the country has been playing the game for decades?!… Seems wrong to me.
I heard that Demarcus Cousins from the Nba is quarter filipino i think the Smart Gilas should target him and offer him a spot on the national team
KOREK KA DYAN ANG NA KILALA LANG SA ATIN AY YUNG IMPORT E
TAKOT YUNG IBANG BANSA SA ATIN DAHIL SA IMPORT
DATI TAKOT SA RP YUNG IBANG BANSA DAHIL SA NA PIPINGGOK YUNG MGA STAR PLAYER NILA
agree!
,.another delayed success in team PILIPINAS but we must still believe that we can reach to the top..GO GILAS we appreaciate all the hardwork and effort,..looking forward to bounce back.
Post nyo pangalan nyo, dpt responsable kau s mga pnagsasabi nyo,
Sad and frustrating, As a basketball fanatic. You let us down guys.
1st. Substitution/Rotation error, (This is very important s crucial games, un tamang pagpasok ng isang player)Nun laban sa Jordan, mganda ang laro ni Casio pero mas bnigyan ng playing time c Alapag knowing n hndi ok un laro ni Jimmy ksi slow pag set up nya s half court nasisira tempo, but against Korea oki un laro nya at hindi k alm kun my nkabasa nun comments k ksi Alapag adjusted s pag setup, pero ngaun naman mas pinapasok c Casio n hndi oki un laro nya.2nd. Pinasok c Mac against Korea, from my comments against Jordan na mgaling c Mac umatake ng zona s shot selection ny within the perimeter pero hindi sya pinasok noon, but this time against Korea hndi ganun ka-active c Mac s depensa, tingnan nyo uli,
naiiwanan sya nun shooter n mainit from korea e ms maliit sya dun, Coach T should have put Mac on Tae Jee Moon (un naturalized) ksi hndi un ganun kabilis and c Lassiter sna un pnabantay nla dun s isa. Against Jordan wala cla mgawa s zona,
3rd. Freethrows, History repeats itself kun hndi tau matutoto, from the tym of Olsen to this time. Mental toughness kelangan dyan ksi wala naman nagbabantay sau, un basics s pag freethrow alam n nla un, Bend your knees and focus s spin ng bola don’t shoot it with most of ur palms, feel the groove ng bola with your fingers and uppermost ng palm then try to spin it,the arc goes with the knees, Try nyo and tell me if I’m wrong.
This sums up what happened and what could’ve been done. From the last two
games they did’nt want it more than their opponents. ‘Yan ang heart of the Champion na cnsbi, hndi pride.
Do you think smart gilas program should continue? I say, Get the Mythical team sa PBA then all the rest s smart gilas program. Under Coach Toroman p din ksi kita nyo naman un systema, S rotation naman dapat handa each player, if you want it, show it. 2 to 3 turnovers lbas k muna.Plus a naturalized with height, Marcus was very good pra na taung may import dun. Disadvantage, hndi din tau cgrdo dun ksi hndi all out maglaro ang mga professionals hndi tulad noon unang panahon nina Loyzaga, Puso ang problema. Kun from the ranks of amateurs naman, un consistency, shot selection, finishing that goes with experience. Also most important, kun nais p din ni Sir MVP mag sponsor, ksi wala naman ibng myayaman n gusto. ksi titingnan mo, iti train un mga napili under the program, gumaling na dhil na expose s international competitions tas papasok sa pro league, nasaan ang patriotism at dedication? Hndi katulad ni Chris tiu na playing for flag tlga, he has done magnificent job on Daghles defensively, pero d k maintindhan kut bkt kinokontest nla jumpshot nun e d nman ganun kgaling s shooting, kmbga focus k lng s depensa ng pag pasa nya.Sympre attracted un iba s money and popularity playing in the pro league,I’m not sure pero somehow affected din un laro nun mga pumasok s pro league ksi prng hindi n gnun katindi mithiin for olympics.
S pro league naman, bka po pdeng mag adjust say at least a conference n i adopt nyo un FIBA style, especially fouls and un zone defense, it’ll help a lot s basketball ntn,nd maybe manood n uli ak ng PBA. With this conference din pkitanggal nun height limit s imports, pra masanay cla n matatangkad klaban, i know hndi ok dito un iba pero ksi nkikita ntn dominating cla pero pgdting s international nawawala, how can we measure up s klaban kun cla cla ngalalaban. Ok un overall performance ng smart gilas, 2 yrs. preparation,un ibng bansa naman 2ld ng Jordan, Iran. how many years un pagsasama to solidify their team. But hndi to un
point, Mico halili,Jason webb,Richard del rosario b un commentator n nerbyoso and saying it was the best finish of our team after 2 decades, the point is they we’re given the chance, un break (kagatin m n), alam naman ntn dba pag playoffs puso n tlga nangigibaw more than skill, I know they played hard against Korea (but not against Jordan-un zone defense issue dun,ala cla mgawa) pero maaring matagal n uli tau mbgyan nun break, un groupings, etc. Kaya gnun panghihinayang namin, It was a heart breaker n nman, Un s finshings naman with the past teams lalo n un all
PBA selections ang taas ng expectations namin pero ala, then how on earth can we be proud of our PRO league, our nation and as an individual, a filipino. we are blinded with the phrase “Iba ang dugong Pinoy”, diba may advertisement p nga using PACQUIAO n cnbing we can achieve coz we’re pinoy, that’s unacceptable.
Where PACQUIAO is, is not bcoz He is a PINOY, It is bcoz of his determination, descipline and most of all with the blessing of God. Do all pinoys posses this? or least do this, I’m am now thinking we Pinoys can’t excel with team plays (basketball) not if we’re pushed to our limits (EDSA revolutions) that’s why as a nation also we don’t go well.(Economy,Politics, etc.).
DAPAT ANG MGA TEAMS SA PBA ANG FOCUS HINDI MAG CHAMPION LANG KUNDI PARA SA BANSA MAG TRAIN CLA NG MGA BIG MAN KSI PURO POINT GUARD ANG MAHALAGA
MAGANDA MAG DRIBOL WLANG ISKOR YUN PAG KUMUHA KASI NG POINT GUARD MAGALING NAAGAD D NA TUTURUAN PAG BIG MAN TUTURUAN PA
MALI CLA DON KUNG BIG MAN AT NATUTONG MAG POINT GUARD PROBLEMA NA NG IBANG TEAM YUN KUNG PAPAANO BABANTAYAN KAYA DAPAT MAG TRAIN NG POING GUARD NA BIG MAN KAGAYA NI JAWO GINAGAWANG POINT GUARD C LOYZAGA E 6/4 YUN SHOOTER PA KAYA NAG POST UP LANG KINA PUMAREN KAYANG KAYA NYA
we are blinded with the phrase “Iba ang dugong Pinoy”, diba may advertisement p nga using PACQUIAO n cnbing we can achieve coz we’re pinoy, that’s unacceptable.

> Mostly NOT! You nailed that comment with a hammer, I agrre with you. Pinoys always selpromote themselves as “basta pinoy magaling, masipag, conservative or matulunginn, taling abut themselves like the other countries doesn’t have those traits and qualities. Puro satsat pero kulang sa gawa, then if there’s a pinoy who says otherwise they’ll tell that pinoy “para kang hindi Filipino magsalita.” When in fact, that kind of Filipino is the real Filipino because he is opens his mind and his heart to accept the fact even when it hurts, to move on to improve ourselves as a society.
D BALENG KULELAT BASTA PURONG PINOY ANG NALALARO PILAYIN YUNG KALABAN OK NA D BALENG TALO BASTA PANALO SA BALDAGAN KAGAYA NG GINAWA NI DEOCAMPO SA JAPAN AT TAIWAN PUTOK ANG MUKA HAHA NICE DIRTY PLAY

> Mostly NOT! You nailed that comment with a hammer, I agree with you. Pinoys always self-promote themselves as “basta pinoy magaling, masipag, conservative or matulungin, talking about themselves like the other countries doesn’t have those traits and qualities.
We can almost taste the olympic dream that we have been chasing but maybe it is not yet time. I feel sorry for our loss but still proud of what our gilas team have accomplished. We still have a long way to go but we are getting there. Mabuhay ang team Pilipinas.I am proud to be a pilipino…
Correct 6’3 at 6’5 forward. Guards lan sa other country. Height is matter sa bsktball. but Alapag is exceptional yung skill. Now mag invest na tayo sa tall player. kahit banban ma e train p. -Nung last 2 mins vs Korea parang agawan buko laro ng Pinoy hirap sa rebound. Again n..
