Gilas Pilipinas: Toroman says Dwight Ramos built like European player
One of the revelations for Gilas Pilipinas has been the consistent and solid play of 6-foot-4 wing man Dwight Ramos throughout the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers.
Ramos first showcased his wares in the second window last year in Bahrain when he led Gilas to back to back wins over Thailand.
In the third window played in Pampanga, Ramos has once again starred for head coach Tab Baldwin’s system.
The Philippines beat Indonesia on Friday, 76-51 where Ramos scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, including five offensive.
Previously, Ramos top-scored with 16 points in the team’s thrilling 81-78 win over Korea. And even Indonesia’s head coach Rajko Toroman has also noticed how impressive Ramos has been for the national team.
“He looks like a European player, good size, very tough, athletic, he can shoot the ball. Really big prospect from Gilas,” Toroman said.
The mentor of the original Gilas program from 2008 to 2011 which also featured collegiate standouts, Toroman added the current cadets already have what it takes to match the level of play of PBA teams.
“I think it is great for basketball in the Philippines to have Gilas because all these players are talented,” the Serbian tactician added.
“For me, I can say that they are on the level of PBA teams in the quality of the players’ talent and size.” Toroman went to as far as agreeing that the current Gilas roster can surpass what Gilas 1.0 accomplished in the past.
The Philippines will play Korea on Sunday to round out its qualifiers campaign before heading to Serbia for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament at the end of the month.
