No problem we have made a big leap with the Smart Gilas program. Now we have a legitimate chance of winning. If we stay the course, give it another to a couple of years will beat them convincingly like we once did during our glory years. Hey this tournament is not over we will see Korea again so keep the faith….
the main problem is they cannot concentrate in crucial game..they are lack of experience.. they should allow more PBA players like kelly williams, jimmy alapag and ranidel de ocampo so that they can have a big chance for winning the fiba asia next month in china..
true. and size matters. so, we need our shooters from outside.
pwede rin naman kunin ng gilas cla norwood, thomas, at c freeman
Speechless for me and less expectation. Just too bad for basketball industry here in the Philippines.
Now everyone recognizes that it’s not defense that primarily wins games but OFFENSE. Now you see why we need a bunch of pure shooters on the team and not just JV Casio. That’s what ails all our teams pro or amateur, too inordinately focused on defense to really concentrate on being on top instead of always managing to play catch-up. Bale-wala ang depensa kung hindi naman nag-aakyat ng numbers sa scoreboard dahil walang opensa. Remember, the good offender will always inflict more damage than the good defender because basketball is a scoring game. The winner is always the better OFFENDER, not DEFENDER. The defender can only win if he is a better offender first. We can’t really understand this inordinately hyped focus on defense that wins games. Only the NBA can expertly say and do that but we amateurs blindly internalize what we don’t fully understand, just because the big boys say so. Just keep shooting your baskets straight and see how they win you more games because you have a tumbang-preso instead of a patintero mentality.
and size matters talaga. kaya every shoot for the small guys, must count.
•Unlike the old glory days of RP basketball, overwhelming firepower always won international campaigns for us. Don’t you realize we have more defenders in basketball these days than real scorers? You wanna know why we used to have a Papa, Adornado, Florencio, Co and other big-time offenders in our champion ABC line-ups? You wanna know why we became Jones Cup champions over a USA team during the time of Allan Caidic and Chip Engelland? Not that we had fake naturalized Americans, but that these two names alone spelled “withering firepower” that made the US team scratch their heads in disbelief. And now we all wonder why we never beat the Koreans? Understand that from the time of Shin Dong Pa, the Sokors never reliquished that shooting tradition in favor of defense. Sure they developed defense too, but we can never ever beat them in the scoring tradition of Mr. Shin, while we in PHP let go of these skills in favor of “clinical/scientific” basketball” that teaches our children more how to spider-dribble and employ robotic 1-2-3 movements that killed our versatility. In our time, missing free throws was mortal sin and so as illegal travel calls so rampant silly committed even by pros. We went Smart Gilas because the pros couldn’t do it and unlearn whatever mistakes they were paid to maintain by becoming the basketball hermits of Asia because the PBA never exposed itself to international competition. And I hope Smart Gilas proves our critics wrong and do better by developing a core scoring machine. It’s never too late to start redirecting these skills.that can defeat even the biggest and most athletic of teams in Asia. At tama si jjhohnkarlo, we still lack that toughness in the end game, taranta-error- turnover lagi ang downfall.
I was a MICAA veteran and I couldn’t agree any stronger. I was part of those glory days and our basketball mentality was much different than today’s. The teams now got stronger ang bigger but so were they in those days compared to us Pinoys. But right you are, we kept shooting down the opposition. In our day you could say the best offense was the best defense. Most of us were 70%-90% free throw shooters and rarely committed travelling violations. It’s the way kids are trained these days kaya nagiging parehong kanan o parehong kaliwa lang ang paa. Shin-Dong-Pa correctly analyzed that when he came over to visit over the years, he only saw 3 players who can use either foot to move or jumpshoot – Atoy Co, Hector Calma and Johnny Abarrientos, no mas.
Arwyn Santos, Alapag, Mercado and ocampo are my recommendables.
and don’t forget joachim thoss. instead of taulava. right? hehe.
kasi basketball dito sa pilipinas is more on trabaho lang kulang sa dedication para sa bansa!!! kaya maraming player na dapat na nakikipaglaban para sa flag natin ang hindi nakakasama dahil ang priority nila is $$$$$.
South Korea is a tough team but we can defeat them if we replace some of our players with williams and alapag, I saw our fellow filipino’s in the stadium laughing when Ha is in the free throw line. HA HA HA! that made my day HA HA HA!
di ma ka shoot hahahaha.
