Gilas Pilipinas Youth beat Japan, books spot to FIBA U17 World Cup
Gilas Pilipinas Youth defeated Japan, 64-59 in the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIBA U16 Asian Championship as they gain a slot in the FIBA U17 World Cup next year. Kiefer Alas once again led Philippines with 29 points along with 9 rebounds and 3 assists.
Joaquin Ludovice with 11 points, 3 rebounds and 2 steals while Kurt Velasquez contributed 10 points, 3 rebounds and 5 steals.
Japan led at halftime, 35-25 but Philippines took the lead at the end of the 3rd quarter, 46-45 led by Kiefer Alas with 14 points in that period. Japan outrebounded Philippines, 58-36 but great defense by Gilas Pilipinas Youth as Japan committed 19 turnovers. (12 steals by Gilas Youth)
Gilas Pilipinas U16 Team (former Batang Gilas) will face Australia in the semifinals on September 24, 2023, 12:30am at the Al-Gharafa Sports Club Multi-Purpose Hall in Doha, Qatar.
