Gilas 3×3 squads undefeated after SEA Games competition Day 1
The Gilas Pilipinas men’s and women’s 3×3 squads both got off to a pristine start in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games 3×3 basketball tournaments being held at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
The men’s team, composed of Moala Tautuaa, Jason Perkins, CJ Perez, and Chris Newsome, scored a 4-0 record after Day 1 of competitions.
The biggest challenge for them came in the opening game against Indonesia, wherein they had to overcome a jittery start.
Indonesia led, 4-0 before Perez and Perkins joined forces to regain control for the hosts.
Philippines eventually won, 21-17 before toppling Myanmar, 21-10, Thailand, 21-10, and Vietnam, 21-15.

In the women’s competition, the foursome of Afril Bernardino, Jack Animam, Clare Castro, and Janine Pontejos likewise went home unblemished with a 3-0 record.
They started out strong, dominating Myanmar, 21-4 to send out a statement, before wounding up with close 15-13 and 16-13 wins over Malaysia and Indonesia, respectively.
It is the first time 3×3 discipline of basketball is being played in the SEA Games.
