Disastrous Gilas dominated by Tunisia in World Cup classification round
What was expected to be a close affair turned into a disastrous outcome for Gilas Pilipinas as Tunisia walked away with a dominant 86-67 win Friday in the 2019 FIBA World Cup classification phase.
Virtually kissing their Olympic hopes goodbye, the Philippines found no rhythm whatsoever, falling behind by a big margin in the opening quarter and struggling to match the intensity of the reigning African champions.
Andray Blatche scored 24 points and hauled down 11 rebounds, although most of his production came when the outcome was already decided.
No other Gilas player finished in double-digit scoring. In contrast, Tunisia had five players scoring at least 10 points.
Omar Abada had a team-high 16 points, naturalized player Michael Roll added 13 points, while Dallas Maverick center Salah Mejri added a double-double of 12 points and 12 boards.
Tunisia jumped out of the gates and established a 27-10 lead after the opening quarter.
Gilas only got back in the fourth frame, making it more respectable after pouring in 28 points.
The nationals will wrap up their unfortunate World Cup stint against fellow Asian side Iran.
