Slovenia crowned European champions for the first time
Slovenia have been crowned European champions, for the first time in their history, defeating Serbia 93-85 in Sunday’s FIBA EuroBasket Final in front of 12,095 fans in Sinan Erdem Arena.
Led by tournament MVP Goran Dragic, whose 26 first-half points had Slovenia up 56-47 at half-time, they had to weather a second-half rally from Serbia, which began when 18-year-old wunderkind Luka Doncic limped off with an ankle injury.
FIBA Asia Cup New Tournament Format
The 2017 FIBA Asia Cup will be held August 10-20, 2017 in Beirut, Lebanon. 16 teams will compete in this tournament including Australia and New Zealand which is now part of FIBA Asia.
Qualified Teams: Lebanon (Hosts), Australia, New Zealand, Qatar (Gulf), Iran (WABA), Jordan (WABA), Iraq (WABA), Syria (WABA), 5 Teams (EABA), 1 Team (SEABA), 1 Team (SABA) and 1 Team (CABA).

FIBA Central Board makes key decisions during first meeting of 2017
FIBA’s Central Board held its first meeting of 2017 on Friday-Saturday 27-28 January at the House of Basketball and it proved an extremely productive two days with a number of major decisions taken as well as a wealth of information shared.
New Competition System
The Board was brought up to speed on the most recent developments leading up to the launch of the New Competition System in November, which will open a new era for basketball worldwide.
Beirut and Bengaluru to host first-ever FIBA Asia Cups as basketball enters new era in Asian region
FIBA’s Regional Office in Asia on Friday announced that the first-ever FIBA Asia Cup will take place in Lebanon’s capital of Beirut, while the maiden FIBA Women’s Asia Cup is to be staged in the Indian city of Bengaluru.
The announcements came as the calendar for what promises to be an exciting 2017 season of events in the region was unveiled.
The FIBA Asia Cup 2017, FIBA Asia’s flagship event, will be played from August 17-27, while the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup 2017 is to be held from July 23-29.
TV5 signs five-year deal to broadcast FIBA national team competitions in Philippines
FIBA on Sunday announced it has reached an agreement with TV5, a major Filipino commercial multi-channel and multi-platform network, for exclusive rights to FIBA national team competitions over the course of a five-year period.
From 2017 to 2021, TV5 will broadcast action from the Continental Cups as well as the FIBA Basketball World Cup. Additionally, with FIBA’s New Competition System coming into effect in November, TV5 will be the place to follow Gilas Pilipinas and other national teams from all over the world as they set out to qualify for the first 32-team edition of FIBA’s flagship event taking place in China in 2019.
SBP submits bid to co-host 2023 FIBA World Cup with Indonesia
After failing in the bid to host the 2019 FIBA World Cup, Philippines will try again this time as co-host of the 2023 FIBA World Cup with Indonesia.

Starting 2017, there will be a new FIBA Competition System featuring Home and Away games for National Teams. This means Gilas Pilipinas will play at home during the window periods from 2017-2019.
