Gilas Pilipinas Men rule 30th SEA Games for 18th basketball gold
The Gilas Pilipinas Men’s national basketball team asserted its might over Thailand for a masterful 115-81 victory in the gold medal match of the 30th Southeast Asian Games Philippines 2019 basketball tournament Tuesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila.
As has been the trend, the Philippines once again flipped the switch in the third quarter with a 40-15 rampage that pushed their lead to an unreachable level.
June Mar Fajardo led a balanced scoring night for the nationals with 17 points and 13 rebounds. LA Tenorio and Christian Standhardinger both added 16 points each while Matthew Wright and Vic Manuel chipped in 14 points each.
A total of seven players finished in double figures for the Philippines, who shot 51 percent from the field overall.
The home side had a big disparity in several departments like rebounding, 54-36, and assists, 29-14.
Thai-American Tyler Lamb was a one-man show for the visitors with his 33 points, eight boards, six assists, two steals, and a block, although he also had four turnovers.
The Philippines won their 13th straight gold medal and 18th overall in the men’s tournament.
The hosts swept all possible golds in the 3×3 and 5×5 events of the basketball category this SEA Games, carrying strong momentum into the years to come.
